Carin Perron: Poems & Prose
Daughter

This poem was awarded third place in the 1992 Bournemouth International Festival Poetry Competition. The judge was Jeremy Hooker (no relation to my husband, John Hooker).

After this, my second win in this blind competition (no names on the poems) under two different judges, the poetry organizer, Thelma Weeks, congratulated me, and said, "Third time's lucky: maybe next year you'll win first." It had never occurred to me to even hope for the first, but I sent in three times the number of poems the next year, and did, indeed, win the first prize, under a third judge, for The Shadow.
